Music Sharing Online
Online music has become so popular over the years and is changing the way music is distributed and consumed as a result. You can download a song within minutes which gets rid of the need to go to a high street shop like HMV at all. I personally still like going into music shops and being able to look at the different sections available and being able to ask questions to the staff face-to-face. However, i can see how easy and fast it is to just download the music online and not have to even leave your house.
This method of music sharing is useful for unknown bands to become more popular as their music can be distributed on a mass scale for no cost. Singers such as Kate Nash and Lilly Allen all became well known through online music sharing. The Artic Monkeys are probably the most well known band for becoming famous through the website Myspace. Their profile purely advertised their music and anyone was able to access it for no money at all.
This could easily change how popular music is viewed. Whereas before bands would need to be signed by a record label, have lots of money for advertising, and be able to travel to places all around the country to become well known. Now bands can have their music be heard all over the country without having to do long travelling as people can download their songs from anywhere. I think this will be a positive factor as unknown bands who wouldn't have had a chance to be heard before now have an effective outlet for their music. Do you agree with me that it's a positive thing or do you think it could lead to the downfall of music stores?

Hey!
I agree with you, i think it is a good thing.
It's good that bands who don't necessarily have the funds, or talent in some record labels eyes, have the opportunity to get their music heard globally, and for free to a wide range of audiences, some of whom are bound to like their music!
Like you've mentioned, just look at the Artic Monkeys, Kate Nash and Lilly Allen. They are all success stories, and are doing really well now! And both the Artic Monkeys and Kate Nash picked up Brits this year, so online music must be influential in some way!!
i agree with the idea that it is still nice to be able to go into shops and buy cds, with some cds it is nice to have the case and the sleeve that goes with it, i have brought the juno soundtrack recently and its got some really nice and interesting facts, that i would never have known if i had just downlaoded it from the internet!!!!
yeah, although I like going in and browsing around like HMV or whatever, i'l only buysomething if it's something i really realy really like or something I can't find online. But with musicals and soundtracks I always like to own the actual CD.
I think it is a positive thing that more and more independant artists/bands are able to be recognised from publicity on the interent, but I also believe that music stores are not like the same as they used to be.
Steph's points interesting that people who have become popular from the internet picked up Brits, so online music is maybe the way to go...??
i dont really go into music stores anymore i don't really feel the need as i just get my music off the internet. I don't even have a cd player anymore in my room.Even if i wanted a cd say TO play in my car instead of going into a music shop to buy one i can just get a blank cd from a shop and downlaod songs from my computer or the internet onto it.Its cheaper than going out to buy a cd plus you can choose which songs you want and have a mixture of your choice.
Even when people browse around music shops like HMV where they sell games and dvds for people to buy i bet this has increased as you can just watch films online now for free so whats the point in buying them.
i dont actually have a cd player in my room any more either!!! and alot of the time i copy songs on to cds to play as well, especially when im doing music for dances and i need a range of songs, i make mix cds, and often the mix that i create could no way be bought in a shop, because my musical taste is so random.
Lauren,
I'm glad to come across a fellow human being, who like me, does still want to buy the actual CDs in the shop!!!! You raise some valid and interesting points on the advantages of music sharing for people and the bands themselves. But, I do worry about the effect this will have on the bands themselves, if they're not selling actual copies of CDs and people are downloading songs illegally....groups just don't seem to maintain their careers for as long nowadays, and I wonder whether the music sharing has contributed to this?
All the best
Emma
